Characters: Who are the main characters that we meet in this part of the book? What did you learn about them?

Tommy is 16 years old and in high school. Abby Lewis is his grandfather. He's a good basketball player, so Mr. Chase wants to talk to him about playing basketball for State (university). Mandy is his girlfriend. He is not racist; one of his best friends is white (Skeeter).

Mr. Chase is a scout for State. He wants Tommy to play basketball for State and go to college there.

Robert Lewis (Planter) is Tommy's father.

Mrs. Lewis is not confident in the promise that Tommy will go to State. She still doesn't think that black people are treated the same way that white people are treated. Just like the Lewis mothers before her, she is worried about her son.

Reverend McKinnon is organizing a civil rights march.

Setting: What is the historical significance of when and where this chapter takes place?

This takes place in the 1960's in the U.S. Black people have more freedom, but there is still racism.

During this time there was a protest for equal right started by black people, known as the civil rights movement.

Plot: What happened in the chapter? Summarize the events.

The chapter starts with Tommy and his team winning the basketball match for Curry. Mr. Chase is impressed of his strategies in basketball and offers him to play for state level. He sends an application to a college to get in.

Tommy have to do marching with other black people for equal rights, but he also want to go to college for playing basketball.

Analysis: Why is this section of the book important? How does it connect or relate to the previous sections?

Just like the Lewis mothers before her, Mrs. Lewis is worried about her son. It also connects to the section with Abby and Elijah saving David; Tommy and his father save Skeeter.

This section of the book is important because, this section is when black and white became equal and shows what did black people do for equal rights.
